Chapter Ten
The tunnels narrowed as they neared the house and Micah stopped at a fork and considered the best way to approach this. The left would take him to the ground floor and the library, the right to the back stairs and the attic.
“You lost?” Connor said.
“Shhh,” Micah hissed. From the attic they would get a better flow to check the house. But the library was closer to the corridor leading to the bedrooms. Decision made, he chose left and together they climbed the steps from the dark cool and up into the house. The tunnel ended just behind the fireplace and Micah peered out through the ironwork that would hide them from prying eyes. The fire wasn’t lit and the library was empty and in darkness.
He tapped Connor on the nose and wiggled it, hoping the shifter would understand what Micah meant.
Connor was one step ahead of him. He’d clearly scented the air and found nothing untoward in the library when he mouthed clear.
Creeping out of their hiding place, they made their way across the library and cautiously moved down the corridor. Staying close to the walls, they finally made it to the door that led to the bedrooms. As they walked past each room Micah looked in, hoping to find his brother. When they came to the last room and there was still nothing, Micah tried not to become disheartened. Joseph could be anywhere in this huge place. He turned to say so very quietly to Connor when he realized Connor wasn’t there. All hell broke loose and he was pushed violently to the floor.
Shouting and chaos and growling, snapping snarling and then a shout for it to stop and suddenly everything ceased.
“We didn’t realize it was you, sir,” said a voice. “Mr. Micah, sir, it’s me.”
Micah peered up in the gloom and when someone flicked a switch and flooded the hall with light, it took a few seconds for his vision to clear. A group of people were huddled in a corner blocked in by a very familiar snarling sable wolf. Another person was helping him to stand. He recognized Aaron as the groundskeeper for the house and pulled away from him.
“What happened, Aaron?” Aaron began to explain, but Micah couldn’t hear him over the sound of growling and crying. The growling intensified in the corner and a couple of children in the group were crying. Micah stalked over to where Connor had the rest of the household staff pinned down. Burying a hand in the thick fur at the scruff of his neck, he spoke firmly, hoping to connect with the man there. Connor looked away from the group who were now mostly silent and up at Micah.
Micah crouched next to him and began talking to him gently.
“Nice doggy, Connor, you can come back now. I’m here to take care of it. Come on, be a good doggy.” He hoped to hell that in this form Connor didn’t understand the content of the words and simply focused on the tone and the reassurance.
